PORTRAIT OF ANN COCKAYNE, LADY FERMOR Follower of Sir Anthony Van Dyck 1599 - 1641 inscribed l.l.: Anne on of Sr daughters of Sr William Cockaine kt by Mary / his wife daughter of Richard Morris esqr/ the wife of Sr Hatton Farmor of Easton Neston in ye/ county of Northamption knight and charged with her coat of arms and those of her descendants The sitter was the daughter of Sir William Cockayne, and his wife Mary, daughter of Richard Morris, Master of the Ironmonger's Company. Her father was a prominent figure in the City of London and was Lord Mayor in 1619-1620. She was one of seven daughters, each of whom made an advantageous marriage - it was said that "his spreading bows and fair branches have given both shade and shelter to some of the goodliest families of England." Anne did not disappoint her father and married Sir Hatton Fermor, who had been knighted by James I when he visited Easton Neston on his way south to London. This fine portrait, together with that of her husband, formed part of the collection of E.J. Wythes, which also included portraits of the Duke of Leeds and of his daughter Lady Lempster.
