Collision Off Sugar Loaf. A skiff sunk and four lives lost. [Long account of a collision between the schooner Summerset, 60 tons, Philip Ridout, master, and the fore-and-after Mary Ann, 17 tons, coming from Northern Bay. The Mary Ann had 23 men and 1 woman on board, and was sunk in the collision. The dead were Charles Wicks, 50, with wife and family; Nicholas Milley, 30, wife; Leander Milley, 17, single; and Sarah Jane Fahey, 45, husband but no children. The 3 men belonged to Burnt Point, and Mrs. Fahey to Gull Island.

The survivors from Burnt Point were Charles Milley, married; Jasper Wicks, married; Thomas Tucker, married; Charles Tucker, married; Andrew Milley, single; and John Davis, married.

The survivors from Gull Island were Sam Stockwood, married; John Oliver, married; Bartlett Oliver, single; Patrick Hogan, married; Mark Delaney, married; John Doyle, married; James Doyle, married; Peter Doyle, married; Michael Percy, married; Wm. Oliver, married; Thomas Fahey, married (husband of the woman who drowned); Gregory Leamon, married; and Leander Stockwood, married.

3 It is with sadness that the family of the late Helen Flood announces her passing at the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre, Grand Falls-WIndsor, NL aged 63. Helen leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories her daughter, Tonya; son, Rodney; grandchildren; Kieria, Kyle, & Katlyn; sisters, Mary, Carmel, Brenda, Linda, & Shirley; brother Alphonsus. 4 "City Fisherman Dies in Boating Accident - Frederick Wareham, a St. John's fisherman died instantly Monday afternoon in an accident aboard a longliner about a quarter of a mile from Big Blackhead. Mr. Wareham, 54 was operating a winch for hauling gill nets on the Barry Carl when he became entangled in the machinery and his body was slammed into the side of the vessel." Wareham, Frederick Edward (I3446)
 
5 "The Whiteway Family of Musgrave Harbour" written in 1983 by R.W. Guy, reports that Mark and Elizabeth raised one of her nephews, Martin West of Ladle Cove. This was likely Joseph's son, born 1866. West, Elizabeth (I10)

In the Name of God, Amen ~

I, John Brook of Anderson in the county of Dorset, England but now of Bay of Islands in the Island of Newfoundland, Planter, being of perfect health of body, of perfect mind and memory, thanks be given to God, calling into mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament and as much as touching such worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this life, I give, devise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form.

First I give and bequeath to James Clark Park the son of Robert and Mary Park now about age eighteen years old of the Bay of Islands, Newfoundland, the sum of one hundred pounds of lawful money of England.

To Thomas Blanchard, the son of William and Elizabeth Blanchard of the Bay of Islands, Newfoundland, I give and bequeath the sum of fifty pounds.

To the son of James and Ellen Hewlin of Saint George's Bay, Newfoundland, I give and bequeath the sum of fifty pounds.

To Ann Syre, the wife of Samuel Syre of Saint George's Bay, Newfoundland, I give and bequeath the sum of twenty pounds.

To the daughter of Thomas and Hannah Goddard of Burin, Newfoundland, I give and bequeath the sum of twenty pounds.

To the son of Richard Gale of Anderson in the county of Dorset, England, I give and bequeath the sum of one hundred pounds.

To Mary Jean, the widow of the late captain William Jean and daughter of my late friend, John Waldron of Poole in the county of Dorset, England I give and bequeath the sum of two hundred pounds of lawful money of England to be raised and levied out of my estate.

Also, I give and bequeath to my well-beloved wife Mary Brook, the widow of the late Robert Park of the Bay of Islands, Newfoundland, the Interest of the remainder of my whole property in the Bay of Islands, Newfoundland, and in England or elsewhere for her life only provided she resides in England after my decease, and after her death I give and bequeath the principal of my whole property, goods, chattles and effects to my well-beloved son, John Brook, but if he should not be heard of within the space of three years after my death I give and bequeath the principal of my whole property, goods, chattles and effects to my well-beloved friend Joseph Bird Senior of Sturnminster Newton in the county of Dorset, England who I constitute, make and ordain my sole Executor of this my last will and testament and I do hereby utterly disallow, revoke and disannul all and every former testaments, wills, legacies, bequests and executors by me in anyways before named, willed and bequeathed, ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament in witness whereof I have hereunto set on my hand and seal this twenty-sixth day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty-three. Proved at London 21st August 1834 before the Judge by the oath of Joseph Bird, the sole Executor to whom admin was granted being first sworn by commission duly to administer.

39 ALFANO, Joan (nee Kirby) - Passed away peacefully in the company of Alfonso (her husband of 45 years) and their three children: Nicholas, David and Christopher, at the Henderson General Hospital, Hamilton, Ontario on December 23, 2002. She was in her seventy-fourth year. She will also be sadly missed by her sister and closest friend Catherine Cleary; three brothers: Barney, Edward and David. Interment Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Hamilton, Ontario. A sincere thank you to all who sent their condolences.

Passed away at the Lakeside Homes, Gander on November 26th,
Mr. Allen Leonard Hodder of Lewisporte, age 91 years.
His remains is resting at Gordon Woolfrey Funeral Home
with visitation from 3:00 - 5:00 pm and 7:00 - 9:00 pm.
The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 29th at 2:00 pm from St. Matthew’s United Church.
As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Canadian Cancer Societywill be gratefully accepted.

Passed peacefully away on Sunday, February 18, 2018 at Lakeside Nursing Home in Gander surrounded by her loving family, Alva Loretta Abbott in her 88th year. Pre-deceased by her parents John and Annie Pennell, cherished grandson Sterling Abbott, great-grandson Pacy Pinsent, great-grandson Lucas Winsor and nephew Bruce King.

Left to mourn with a lifetime of loving memories are her devoted husband of 71 years, Joseph(Ned) Abbott, her children Lawrence(Joyce), Naboth(Brenda), Verna Dampier(William), Leslie(Dale), Pearce(Wendy), Homer(Linda), Ula Tulk(Roy), 20 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild, sister Eva Kudelka, nieces Bonnie Brostowitz(Dave), Tammy McKnight, Tina House, nephew Craig McKnight, and a large circle of extended relatives and friends.

Our deepest gratitude to the nurses and staff of Lakeside Nursing Home for their compassionate care.

Flowers gratefully accepted or a donations in Alva's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Society.

Resting at the Pentecostal Church, Musgrave Harbour from where her funeral service will take place on Wednesday, February 21st at 2pm with Pastor Rex Boone officiating.

In the name of God Amen
__ day of September in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and fifty
I Ambrose Sparkes Senior of Bull Cove in the Island of Newfoundland, Planter being sound and perfect both of body and mind and of perfect memory, thanks be given to Almighty God, knowing that it is appointed unto all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament; that is to say principally and first of all, I give and recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God that gave it, and my body I recommend to the earth, to be buried in decent Christian burial, at the [discretion] of my executors nothing doubting but at the general [resurrection] I shall decide the same again by the Almighty power of God. And as touching such worldly estate wherewith it has pleased God to bless me in this life, I give demise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form
First, I give to my son Ambrose the eastern part of my plantation at Bull Cove on which is at present erected a Stage and Store and flake to extend twenty yards from the seaside North bounded on the West by the premises I give to my son Stephen as hereinafter particularly described. I also give to my son Ambrose part of the school House meadow bounded on the East by the Calves pen meadow in the west by a large Juniper tree as also one half of the calves pen meadow as it is now in his possession. Secondly, I give to my son Stephen all that part or parcel of land and premises that he now occupies and possesses with all and singular the erections thereon also all the large flake with all the land that I now possess to the East of the main road exclusive of one half of the large square of Potato ground and the two fruits gardens. I also give unto him my son Stephen the whole of the dwelling house I now occupy and the Western part of the school House meadow bounded on the East by the part given to my Son Ambrose as before described in this Instrument as also the Western fruit garden after the decease of my wife Anne. Thirdly I give to my son Moses all the land and premises he now holds and occupies with all and singular the erections thereon as also all the Water Side flake, and the half of the large square of the Potato ground West of that part given to my son Stephen and also the meadow ground West of the premises now occupied by the said Moses.
Fourthly I give to my son John one four and a half feet sealing gun and I further give to my beloved wife Ann the two fruit gardens all the cattle furniture and all the moveable articles of property in and about the premises during her natural life and whatever of the said cattle or furniture or other articles that may remain after her decease is to be given to my son Stephen and also it is my particular wish and desire that no part of the land or premises given to either of my Sons as mentioned in the foregoing instrument shall either be sold or Mortgaged or in any way transferred from either of the family. Fifthly and lastly I do appoint Mr. Thomas Godden of Harbour Grace Merchant and Mr. Thomas Ash of the same place Planter to be my Executors to this my last will and testament and I do hereby utterly disallow reverse *** all and former wills legacies bequests and Executors by my in any ways before executed willed and staments bequeathed by me and confirming that this to be my last will and testament In *** Witness thereof I hereunto set my hand and Seal the day and year first written
