- Obituary West, Hardy Corbett Passed peacefully away on Thursday, June 30, 2016, at James Paton Memorial Hospital, Gander, Hardy Corbett West, aged 91. Born in Ladle Cove, Notre Dame Bay December 16, 1924, he is pre-deceased by parents Theophilus and Elaine West, and brothers Wilson and Ronald West (Doris), of Ladle Cove. Leaving to mourn with many fond memories, are wife Doris of Gander; daughter, Sandra Kelly (Ron) of Gander; daughter Sharon McCann (Alan) of Edmonton, Alberta; son, Eric (Claudia), of Ladle Cove; brother Clarence West (Ivy) of Gander; grandchildren, Ronald Kelly (Annie) of Cochrane, Alberta; Sean Kelly (Janet) of St. John's; Kevin McCann (Becky) of Edmonton, Alberta; great grandchildren Tayla, (Jordan), Kael, and Isabel Kelly, all of Cochrane Alberta; and a wide circle of extended family and friends. Hardy grew up in Ladle Cove, one of four brothers. As a young man, he spent time fishing, cutting wood and hunting. In 1942, he moved to Gander to work, eventually becoming a book keeper and office manager with Goodyear Humber Stores. In 1948, he married Doris Wellon, also from Ladle Cove. Together they built a new life, building one of the first houses on the new Gander townsite, and raising three children, Sandra, Sharon, and Eric. Hardy retired in 1984 and spent over 30 years enjoying the great outdoors, especially boating, fishing, and his true passion - gardening. Hardy often returned to Ladle Cove where he and his family spent many summers with family and friends. Hardy was an active, 'behind the scenes' volunteer with many charities, youth and community organizations. He donated his bookkeeping and tax accounting skills to the Church, the Boy Scouts, the Food Bank, and many of Gander's seniors. Hardy will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by all who knew him. Heartfelt thanks are extended to the devoted doctors and nursing staff of James Paton Memorial Hospital. The West family also wish to express their gratitude to the many family members, neighbors and friends who offered kindness and support throughout this difficult time. Funeral Services was held at Fraser Road United Church, interment followed at All Saints Cemetery on Saturday, July 2, at 3:00 P.M.
