  Notes	Excerpt from "Descendants of Joseph West" compiled by Rex Gibbons, 2010 "At the age of 17, Ronald lied about his age and signed up for military service in Grand Falls, Newfoundland. He became a member of the 59th Regiment of the Royal Newfoundland Heavy Artillery. After some training and a brief stop in Halifax, along with many other Newfoundlanders, he headed overseas (a 28-day voyage). For the next six years, his travels in the military took him to England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany, and other parts of Europe. After returning home after the war, as a Lance Corporal, he settled in Ladle Cove, the home of his wife, Doris. Before he died, he gave his grandson, John-Charles Tulk, the old uniform that he was wearing when he came home from the war in 1945. Young John-Charles and his sister, Jacinta, became members of Air Cadets 537 Squadron of Gander, and John-Charles wore his grandfather's uniform at the 2005 annual review where his sister, Jacinta, gave a speech about her grandfather, appropriately called "My Hero". Mr. West, by then very feeble, was also proudly escorted to the podium after the speech."
