- Jane was Mi'kmaq
- It was said that Jane was the daughter of "Old Man Matthews", however, research indicates that this was in fact John Matthews born about 1771, possibly brother or other relation of Jane's. It is unknown who Jane's parents are.
Some researchers have suggested that William Matthews (1744-1823) and Elvir Langfer (1752-1821) were her parents, however, they were both British with no current known ties to Newfoundland and Jane was reportedly Mi'kmaq so this isn't possible.
