- On the night of Thursday, January 31, 2008, the 15-metre steel tugboat, Checkmate III, sank about 12 kilometres north of Baccalieu Island, Newfoundland. Coast Guard search and rescue responded after receiving a garbled mayday call (probably from a cell phone). A Cormorant helicopter, a Hercules aircraft, and two vessels were dispatched immediately to the scene.
When they arrived, they found the two men (Lawrence Parsons and his colleague, Christopher Wade Oram), in the water wearing survival suits, and a liferaft was floating nearby, but there was no sign of the boat (it had sunk). Efforts to revive the men were unsuccessful, though there was some indication that they had been seen to wave their hands before being rescued. A spokesman for the Coast Guard, Kevin Barnes, is quoted in the St. John's Telegram as saying that "Both survival suits had considerable water inside, ... somehow water got in, which reduces the thermal ability of the suits to keep you alive". Autopsies conducted late Friday, February 1, in St. John's concluded that Parsons and Oram died from a combination of drowning and hypothermia.
