Name |
Walter George Hicks |
- Walter worked with his father and brothers in the cod and lobster fisheries. He also worked at other jobs, including the lumberwoods, until he became lightkeeper on the Offer Wadham Island.
Walter was appointed lightkeeper on Offer Wadham Island in September 1938 and stayed for 22 years. A new Swedish Daylen battery light went into operation on November 8, 1960, and Walter came off the island on November 28, 1960. However, he continued to look after the light for another few years, going in and out from time to time whenever the light needed attention; he officially retired in November, 1967. His assistant for many years was his brother-in-law, Herbert Abbott. Walter was awarded the C.S.F. for services rendered during the 2nd World War.
