"After their marriage, Theophilus and Alfreda moved to Carmanville South, and erected a home and premises there. From a very young age, he became interested in work and "on the sea" as a trade. At the age of 22 years, he owned a schooner, boats, and fishing gear, and he fished on the Labrador very successfully. The "sea" became part of him; he built the schooner S. T. W., and later skippered four other schooners.
"He was my skipper on a lengthy trip and I remember well that December morning in the early dawn, 1929, after a very anxious night of wind and stormy blizzard when he was 32 years old and I was 17, in the face of death as our schooner (Erema H) was about to crash onto the rocks of Inner Cat Island near Lumsden. He said, we'll be alright my son. Our motor boat was put over the rail and he said, now, jump over the rail at the first chance, which I did. We all got ashore safely and were taken care of by the good people of Lumsden.
"Uncle Theoph" was a man of many good qualities. He possessed good judgement, a keen sound sense, and was courageous and strong. He was a great sailor. I always respected his advice. He was also a carpenter. He did considerable work on the Salvation Army Citadel and designed the rostrum."
