Plot: Section LENotes - From Grandson in 2021: Henry Spencer Purchase (b: Twillingate @ 1880) left Twillingate at age of about 17 to become a miner. He mined in PIlleys Island then went to the copper mines in Tilt Cove. It is here I believe he met Louisa Wareham of Shoe Cove. In about 1903/4 they migrated to the coal mines in Sydney, NS. On December 20, 1905 they were married, there's a marriage registry doc signed by each. Louisa, age 21, lists place of birth as Shoe Cove, father and mother as James and Ellen Wareham. Father was a fisherman.
Henry and Louisa had 4 boys between 1905 and 1910, James, John, William Gordon, my dad, and Henry Augustus. John died as child.
On Jan 3, 1911, Henry Spencer Purchase was killed in a mine explosion and Louisa had to carry on with no job or money and 3 boys under the age 7. She took in laundry, boarders, what ever it took. James went to the mines at age of 8 to help out. In 1915 Louisa had a child out of wedlock, Charles. Rumor was that he was the product of a boarder, a Baptist minister. No one really knows for sure. In any event she was able to raise all four boys in the turbulent teens and 20's in Cape Breton mining town of Florence. Sons William and Henry migrated to Toronto in about 1936 and Charles and Louisa followed in 1938. Charles never left her side until she died in 1967 in Brantford Ontario. He was found dead 12 days later.
Louisa was the most enigmatic person I ever came across. She basically never spoke of anything substantial. Charles was in fact her spokesperson.
