- DR. MICHAEL 'MICKEY' BRENNAN
MD, CCFP, FCFP,
Died November 25, 2017 in London Ontario. Born July 1, 1930 he was the last living of eleven children born to Louis and Miriam (Minta) Brennan (née Zotnick), in Dublin, Ireland.
Mickey led a generous, courageous, and unapologetic life. He fought poverty, homelessness, anti- semitism, decades of heart disease and four bouts of cancer. An elementary school drop-out he literally fought for an education - a championship boxer, he put himself through medical school on boxing purses, tiny loans from whomever had money, and many and varied sofas.
At the forefront of contemporary family medicine, he became Professor Emeritus of Family Medicine at Western University, and a recipient of Iceland's Order of the Falcon.
Mickey is predeceased by his parents, Louis and Minta, his Auntie Gertie, his second wife, Linda Spano, his adopted granddaughter, Mary Bee, and all ten of his siblings: Esther, Bea, Rose, Hilda, Joe, Mattie, David, Aubrey, Stanley, and Annella. He is survived by his children, Dawn, Nonie, and Keith, their mother, Teresa Brennan, his son-in-law, Michael Peirce, his granddaughters, Jocelyn and Andie Peirce and Sasha-Lee Prince, and his devoted caregiver, Monette Lopez. And dozens of nieces and nephews, scattered across the globe.
In the end he lost the fight against dementia, but not his love of life, a good laugh, a great meal, shopping, singing, and the companionship of friends and family. He has embarked on one last trip home to Dublin, where his nephew, Rabbi Lipa Brennan, will return him to the earth. The family will hold an Open House to celebrate Mickey's life, Sunday December 10th from 2pm to 4pm in the Parlour and Drawing Room of Idelwyld Inn, 36 Grand Avenue, London Ontario.
