- On December 5, 2005, Ron was in a car accident in St. John's, NL. It was a snowy night and he was immediately knocked unconscious, a state in which he remained until mid-January 2006. An MRI while in the coma showed Diffuse Axonal Injury, an injury to the pathways (axons) of the brain. Once in better condition, he was moved to the Miller Centre's rehabilitation program but did not progress well so he was moved to Hoyle's Nursing Home in April, 2006 where he remained until he suffered a stroke in March of 2008 and he died March 23, 2008 (Easter Sunday) in the presence of his daughter Lynda at the Health Sciences Centre.
- Ron was a speed walker in his teens and early 20s and had many trophies and awards. He worked as a printer, realtor, and as arena manager at Twin Rinks from about 1974-2000. He had his own business "Ronald West Printing" that he operated from his home for many years during this time as well. In the 1970s and early 1980s, he printed the racing programs for the horse race track in Goulds as well.
He was heavily involved in hockey throughout his life and was a referee for minor hockey and an off-ice official for the St. John's Maple Leafs, an AHL professional team.
Ron had a brief stint in the army in 1960.
