618 | The following note was done by Roland W. Abbott, his nephew: Source: Descendants of Joseph West, compiled by Rex Gibbons 2010 "After their marriage, Theophilus and Alfreda moved to Carmanville South, and erected a home and premises there. From a very young age, he became interested in work and "on the sea" as a trade. At the age of 22 years, he owned a schooner, boats, and fishing gear, and he fished on the Labrador very successfully. The "sea" became part of him; he built the schooner S. T. W., and later skippered four other schooners. "He was my skipper on a lengthy trip and I remember well that December morning in the early dawn, 1929, after a very anxious night of wind and stormy blizzard when he was 32 years old and I was 17, in the face of death as our schooner (Erema H) was about to crash onto the rocks of Inner Cat Island near Lumsden. He said, we'll be alright my son. Our motor boat was put over the rail and he said, now, jump over the rail at the first chance, which I did. We all got ashore safely and were taken care of by the good people of Lumsden. "Uncle Theoph" was a man of many good qualities. He possessed good judgement, a keen sound sense, and was courageous and strong. He was a great sailor. I always respected his advice. He was also a carpenter. He did considerable work on the Salvation Army Citadel and designed the rostrum." | Blackwood, Theophilus William (I1429)

619 | The Harbour Grace Standard; Jun. 18, 1887 OVERDUE VESSELS - Two vessels, we learn from the Colonist, are now a long time overdue at St. John's. Much anxiety is felt for their safety. 621 | The paternity of Martha's first 5 children is unknown, no birth records exist for these people. When she married William Lush in 1897, it appears that all her children took his surname. All records after this date indicate their name as Lush. Descendants of Maud have no DNA connection to any Lush family so we know he was not her father. | Sparkes, Martha Ann (I1283)

623 | There are two birth records for a Maria Luffman Morgan born to Edmund and Fanny Morgan. 12 Sep 1857 in Brazils and 19 Dec 1860 in Petites. Perhaps the first child died and the next girl was renamed the same? It was a common practice throughout many families to reuse names of deceased children. No way to be completely sure until a death record is located however. Both birth records are in Vital Statistics- Petites Petites (Methodist) Birth 1857-1891, Vol. 98 | Morgan, Maria Luffman (I2216)

625 | There are two records available for the marriage of Martin West. One indicates his wife's name as Elizabeth Whiteway and the says Mary. Elizabeth is listed in the Newfoundland, Canada, Births, Marriages, and Deaths 1850-1949, Marriages 1891-1892 Volume 01 Mary is listed in the Newfoundland, Canada, Births, Marriages, and Deaths, 1757-1901, Fogo, Musgrave Harbour, Marriages 1874-1891, Vol. 84 of the Newfoundland Vital Statistics Collection. Vital Statistics were copied from original records so it is possible there was an error and the name should be Elizabeth, not Mary however, it is unknown for sure. Noted June 5, 2022 NP Update: Mary Ann West is listed in the death records of Ladle Cove Church. noted Aug 2, 2024 NP | Family: Martin West / Mary Anne / Elizabeth Whiteway (F257)

626 | There is no birth record for Maud so her biological father is officially unknown. Some of Henry's great great grandchildren have DNA tested and are third cousins to me. This would be an accurate relationship for him to be Maud's bio father. More research is required but it is a possibility that needs to be explored more. Note however, that he and Maud have the same nose, further indicating a possible relationship. | SIMMS *, POSSIBLY HENRY HARRY (I7189)
|
627 | There was a John Joseph Kirby born July 7, 1879 and baptized July 11, 1879 parents John Kirby and JOHANNA Fahey. Could this entry be this John Joseph? Maybe Johanna could have been mistaken for Jane? Also these records are transcripts with many illegible entries in the original so it's possible there were errors in transcription as well. See record attached to this profile. Source: Title: Baptism, Marriage; Portugal Cove, Salmonier, St Johns, Torbay; 1844-1899 Source Information Ancestry.com. 628 | There's another record of a marriage of Mary Goldsworthy to William Bannister on 15 Oct 1824, St Paul's Anglican Church, Trinity. Could it be this Mary Goldsworthy and the one that marriages Stephen Wareham is actually her sister Maria? | Goldsworthy, Mary (I3095)

632 | Things about Ralph: At 12 years old, he went to Millertown, Newfoundland, to work in the woods cutting trees for the pulp and paper mill in Grand Falls. The work was from September/October to March. He was hired on reluctantly due to his age but worked hard among all the men and earned $21.00 for the season. He celebrated his 13th birthday in the woods. | Park, Ralph Noble (I2032)

637 | Thomas Fahey owned 2 plots 185 yds from S. to N. and 73 yds from E. to W. in Western Bay in 1786. 1 plot was purchased from Jno. Tucker and Noah Perry for £3 and the other cut out of the woods Source: Newfoundland Plantation Books Collection, Conception Bay 1804-06, Maritime History Archive, Memorial University of Newfoundland | Fahey, Thomas (I3048)
|
638 | Thomas Gordon (Lush) West's baptism registry implies Maud was married to John Lush when Thomas was born in 1908 and her name was previously Sparkes. I had previously assumed/believed she was using the name Lush after her mother married William Lush in 1897; no marriage records have been found for John Lush and Maud or death record for John. POSSIBLE theory: her step brother John Lush stood in as Thomas' father so he wouldn't be seen as illegitimate. | Lush, Mary Emma (I994)
|
639 | Thomas was first married to Amelia French: Thomas Mercer from Bay Roberts, Bachelor, Fisherman, and Amelia French, Spinster, were married on December 27, 1889 at the Home of Edward Russell, Bay Roberts, by Rev. 640 | Tidbits of info from Gloria Packard's husband, Stephen. 2021: There was a cafe called Anapolis Cafe next to the naval base in California and it was all you can eat. Tom was very cheap and would eat a lot and not leave a tip He loved western novels He loved the tugboats in Toronto harbour and worked on them he was a pay it forward kind of person and very well respected | Lush West, Thomas Gordon "Tom" (I995)

|
643 | To Research: In the Keith Matthews Name Files, there are a number of references to Nicholas in East Teignmouth, Devon. Could this be where the Nicholas family came from? There were three couples named Nicholas having children at the same time in Harbour Grace in the early 1800s- William and Jane, Thomas and Amy (Martin), John and Sarah. I have DNA connections to some descendants of Thomas and John, it is likely these three men were brothers. | Nicholas, William (I376)

645 | TULK Beaton With profound sadness and broken hearts, we announce the passing of Beaton Tulk, devoted husband, father, and grandfather, who died following a lengthy battle with cancer on 23 May 2019 at the age of 75 years. Beaton is lovingly remembered by his best friend and wife Dora; daughter Cynthia (John) and children Ryan and Nicole; daughter Christine (Henry) and son Jeremy; son Conrad (Amelia); step-daughter Alicia (Dan) and children Mackenzie and Chris; step-daughter Kerry-Lynn (Scott) and daughter Samantha; and very special great-granddaughter Jayda. He is also remembered by his sisters-in-law Lee Humby (Harvey), Dorothy Holloway, Sandra Downey (Skip), and Bernice Clarke; brother-in-law Dave Cook; Aunt Hilda; Aunt Leah; partner in crime Bob Gosse; niece Gay Clarke, cousin Bertram Tulk, and numerous other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He is predeceased by his parents Sadie and Japhet Tulk; sister Blanche; parents-in-law Otto and Amy Skiffington; brothers-in-law Boyd Skiffington, Don Skiffington, Gus Clarke, and Boyce Oake; sisters-in-law Amelia Cook and Alliston Skiffington. From his early life growing up in the output community of Ladle Cove, Beaton learned the values of hard work and giving back to the community. These values, along with his intellect and determination, guided him during his early career as a teacher and throughout his long and distinguished career in politics and public service. Starting out as the Member for Fogo and later Bonavista North, Beaton held numerous positions in both opposition and government and notably served as the 7th Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador. Never content to be still for long, his "retirement" years were filled with consulting, writing his memoirs, and travelling to visit family and friends with his beloved Dora. Beaton's unmistakable laugh filled every room he entered. His zest for life, fun-loving nature, gift to tell stories, and genuine interest in talking to everyone he met drew people to him wherever he went. Generous and kind, he loved nothing better than a good game of cards, particularly 500s or poker. An avid hockey fan, he would give an enthusiastic shout when watching the Montreal Canadiens score a goal. He never missed a moose-hunting season or a chance to cook up a big meal for a crowd. He thoroughly enjoyed Western movies, listening to country music while driving his big red truck, and woodworking; he was known to put up a patio in what seemed like no time at all. Always the person we could turn to for help when life got tough, he was truly one-of-a-kind and will be dearly missed. A public visitation will be held in the lobby of Confederation Building between 2:00 and 6:00 pm on Friday 24 May. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday 25 May at the Salvation Army Islandview Citadel in Musgravetown with Majors Austin and Lillian Randell officiating and at 2:00 pm on Sunday 26 May at St. Stephen’s United Church, Ladle Cove with Reverend Boyce Parsons officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kids Eat Smart Foundation. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Fewer’s Funeral Home, Clarenville. | Tulk, Beaton (I567)
