409 | note from Donna Wareham, June, 2021: What I know is my great grandfather came over from England with his brothers; I think that there were 2 or 3 brothers. I believe that they were fishermen. My father said that his grandfather used to be a whaler. He fell in love with a Irish, Catholic girl Margaret Curtis and converted to Catholicism to marry her. On his baptism certificate it states that his parents are Alexander Wareham and Mary Wheeler. It also said that he was living in Bonavista. The change of religions caused a falling out with his brothers and I do not think that they spoke again. He and Margaret had 4 children in NFLD and then 3 more after they moved to Montreal. They are both buried in Cote des Neiges Cemetery in Montreal. | Wareham, Charles (I3110)

Tony was born in Dublin, Ireland where he was apprenticed to the printing trade at the age of 14. He immigrated to Canada in 1967 and after working as a printer for the Winnipeg Free Press and RL Crain in Ottawa began selling cars. He is at rest after fighting valiantly against cancer for the last year of his life. His infectious smile and generous spirit will be missed by all who knew him. Tony was predeceased by his father, John, his mother, Catherine and his brothers-in-law, Paddy, Billy, Mike and Murray. He will be lovingly remembered by his sisters Bridie, Maureen and Rita, his nieces Sandra (John) and Janet (Ken), their children and his nephew John. His god-children Matthew and Emma, his much loved mother-in-law Kay, sisters-in-law Marianne and Joan, and Karen and Ryan will also miss him dearly. 417 | Obituary - Thomas Mercer - There passed peacefully away on May 7th, {1933} Thomas, beloved son of the late Isaac and Eliza Mercer. Deceased was in his 71st year and was born and lived all his days at Mercer's Cove, Bay Roberts, and from his boyhood pursued the fishery, where he was widely known and greatly beloved by all with whom he came in contact. For the past three month he had been in failing health, and all that medical aid and the care and attention of his family to try and restore him to health could do was done but failed. On Sunday afternoon, May 7th, his spirit took flight to the regions beyond. "Where the weary are at rest." Left to mourn are his wife and eight children, three sons residing in the U.S.A., namely, Jonathan, Arthur and Lemuel, one daughter residing in Port de Grave, Mrs. Walter Bussey, and two daughters, Emily and Theresa, and two sons, Edgar and Cecil at home, who are sorely bereaved of a loving husband and father. Also five sisters, Mrs. Joseph Mercer, Mrs. Lot Snow, Mrs. William Mercer, Mrs. Susie Fifield and Mrs. John Gray, and 9 grandchildren, to all of whom the friends and neighbours extend sincere sympathy. // The funeral took place to the Central United Church on Tuesday, May 9th, the Rev'd. A. R. Baggs officiating. A large concourse of people attended; also the L.O. Society paraded and rendered very appropriate music. The service at the church and graveside was very impressive. The hymns for the service were, "let us join our friends above", "How bright these glorious spirits shine", "How firm a foundation". The text for the address was the 1st verse of the 5th chapter of 2nd Corinthians,"For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens." The pastor made touching references to our departed brother's Christian experience, and paid a high tribute to him. The anthem at the Church was a favourite of the deceased brother. 433 | On 3 January 2023 the most beautiful of souls left this earth at the young age of 37. Charlee Tulk came into the world in a hurry on October 9, 1985 in St. John’s, Newfoundland, where she made her early appearance at the Grace Hospital. Raised in Aspen Cove, she spent much of her early years in Carmanville with her Nan and Pop West. Special in every way that one can imagine, Charlee loved life - and we all loved Charlee. Always wanting to put her best foot forward, she excelled at everything she touched. She lived by the motto, “If someone tells me I can’t do it, I will do it twice”. This started in school, with her homework completed before the start of every class and carried on with her participation in Brownies. As a young teenager, she joined 537 Gander Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron and rose quickly through the organization, reaching the rank of Warrant Officer First Class and holding the Squadron Chief appointment. Charlee was the recipient of numerous awards, including the Royal Canadian Legion Cadet Medal of Excellence, and was selected to attend several summer camps: Antigonish (Basic), Cold Lake (Senior Leaders), Greenwood (Staff Cadet), and the prestigious International Air Cadet Exchange (IACE). Starting her post-secondary education at Mount Allision University in Sackville, New Brunswick Charlee transferred to the Centre for Nursing Studies in St. John’s, graduating with a Bachelor of Nursing in 2011. While living in St. John’s, Charlee met the love of her life, Justin Andrews. A young professional, she began her career at the Health Sciences Centre as an ICU nurse. With her career established, they purchased their first home in Pouch Cove and enjoyed it to the fullest until moving to Gander in 2019, following Charlee’s graduation from Athabaska University as a Nurse Practitioner. Outside of her professional success, Charlee loved adventure. She ran like the wind and wherever life took her – from the streets of Gander in the evenings, to the roads of Roddickton while on a locum, to the shores of the Caribbean while on vacation, she strapped on a pair of sneakers to enjoy the scenery. An avid outdoors person, Charlee was skilled with a rifle and filled many freezers with moose meat. In fact, she was featured in the Newfoundland Sportsmans magazine, not once but twice. But that was just the tip of the iceberg as she also loved salmon fishing, snow shoeing and Nordic skiing. Not limited to the outdoors, Charlee enjoyed time curled up in front of the TV with her knitting needles in hand and her yarn in her bag by her side – a bag that was graced with images of The Golden Girls, reflective of Charlee’s old spirit and love of laughter. She also crocheted and made crafts, setting up booths at several craft shows across the island. A lover of animals, she had an affinity for dogs – welcoming three into her home: Callie, Tucker, and Lucy. Callie was her first puppy, a Shitzhu who brightened her life while in Nursing school. A few years later Tucker wandered into her life, quite by accident, and became living proof that being lost in the woods can turn out to be a good thing. Her final dog was her beloved Saluki mix rescue, Lucy. They spent hours together walking, cuddling, and learning new skills – with Lucy trained by her new Mom to say her prayers. It was common knowledge that Charlee loved dogs more than she loved people and given what she did for people, this makes us all appreciate how she must have loved dogs to the moon and back again. Feeling her loss and left to mourn are Charlee’s spouse, Justin Andrews; parents Cindy West and Geoffrey Tulk; grandfather Clarence West; brother Tyson and nieces Madison and Brooklyn; in-laws Pansy and Lorne Andrews; sister-in-Law Ashley (Scott) Ward and niece and nephew Ava and Hunter; Aunt Gloria Angell, Aunt Diane Eastman, and Uncle Wayne (Kim) West; several cousins, and large circle of friends and colleagues. A funeral service will be held at Carmanville United Church on Saturday, 21 January at 2:00pm with a reception to follow next door at Phoenix Academy. Donations in Charlee’s memory can be made to Beagle Paws Rescue or any chapter of the SPCA | Tulk, Charlee (I5833)

434 | On December 5, 2005, Ron was in a car accident in St. John's, NL. It was a snowy night and he was immediately knocked unconscious, a state in which he remained until mid-January 2006. An MRI while in the coma showed Diffuse Axonal Injury, an injury to the pathways (axons) of the brain. Once in better condition, he was moved to the Miller Centre's rehabilitation program but did not progress well so he was moved to Hoyle's Nursing Home in April, 2006 where he remained until he suffered a stroke in March of 2008 and he died March 23, 2008 (Easter Sunday) in the presence of his daughter Lynda at the Health Sciences Centre. | West, Harold "Ronald" Clyde (I1006)

436 | On the death record, there are 2 columns named "Place of Death". I believe the second is an error and should read Place of Birth. In reviewing other entries on the same and surrounding pages, the second column clearly means place of birth as it lists very different places from the first column. This puts his birth at Bonavista, not England as was previously believed. Likely the eldest son of Stephen Wareham and Mary Goldsworthy, brother to Charles and James. | Wareham, John (I1230)

437 | On the night of Thursday, January 31, 2008, the 15-metre steel tugboat, Checkmate III, sank about 12 kilometres north of Baccalieu Island, Newfoundland. Coast Guard search and rescue responded after receiving a garbled mayday call (probably from a cell phone). A Cormorant helicopter, a Hercules aircraft, and two vessels were dispatched immediately to the scene. When they arrived, they found the two men (Lawrence Parsons and his colleague, Christopher Wade Oram), in the water wearing survival suits, and a liferaft was floating nearby, but there was no sign of the boat (it had sunk). Efforts to revive the men were unsuccessful, though there was some indication that they had been seen to wave their hands before being rescued. A spokesman for the Coast Guard, Kevin Barnes, is quoted in the St. John's Telegram as saying that "Both survival suits had considerable water inside, ... somehow water got in, which reduces the thermal ability of the suits to keep you alive". Autopsies conducted late Friday, February 1, in St. John's concluded that Parsons and Oram died from a combination of drowning and hypothermia. She would visit mom, and when she was leaving, mom would take something out from under her apron and give to her but I don't know what it was. I think her maiden name may have been Morrissey. Mom didn't talk about people and we didn't ask but I went to school with a Morrissey and later I somehow put together that she was related to Nora. | Whelan, Norah (I1223)
