Clarence was born on September 25, 1932 in Carmanville, NL to Alphaeus and Beatrice West. Clarence is predeceased by his parents; his loving wife Juanita of 64 years; brother Ralph; sisters Pearl, Annie, Delilah, Florence, Olive, Althea, Bessie, and Gertrude; grandchildren Rodney and Charlee; and sons-in-law David and Everett. Clarence lived his entire adult life a few steps away from his childhood home. At the age of 20, he built the house in which he and his wife raised their family, and in which he continued to live until this summer. This house was more than just a home for his family, it became a symbol of strength and endurance for a man whose entire life was spent working with his hands to provide for his family. Clarence loved everything about the outdoors, whether it be hunting, fishing, berry picking, gardening, or spending time at his cabin. Visitation will take place at Stacey’s Funeral Home in Carmanville on Tuesday, November 26 from 2-4pm, and 7-9pm. Funeral will take place on Wednesday, November 27 at the Salvation Army Citadel at 11am. Interment will follow. 265 | It is with a saddened heart that we announce the peaceful passing of Bouwina Fogwill (nee Hann). Bouwina leaves to mourn her loving children Frank, Margaret Heffernan (Tim), Bill (Sherry). Her grandchildren, Shane (Julie) and Kyle Heffernan, and Nicholas Fogwill, who all shared a special bond with their Oma. She treasured their conversations and followed all their adventures. She was blessed with two sisters, Kay Korpel (Case), St. John’s and Johanna De Buck (Piet), Netherlands. Bouwina treasured her large circle of family and friends, they brought much joy to her life. Born in the Netherlands, she embarked on an adventure that led her to Canada, where she embraced her adopted country with open arms. Mom was a remarkable woman whose journey spanned continents and touched countless lives through her church activities by knitting prayer shawls for those needing comfort, hats, scarves, and mittens for those needing warmth, and pneumonia vests for newborns in underdeveloped countries. Mom was an active member of St. David’s church community. She led the prayer shawl and knitting groups, enjoyed bowling, participated in fundraising activities, and was treasurer of the Atlantic Mission Society. Her extended church family contributed in creating a beautiful memory for her earlier this year, when she celebrated her 93rd birthday in Dutch style. Mom was proud of her Dutch heritage and liked to share her experiences of being a young girl in WWII’s triumphs, setbacks and witnessing her country being liberated by Canada. She honoured and never forgot the sacrifices these soldiers made. These experiences contributed to her zest for life, inspiring those around her to embrace each day with gratitude. Mom continued to work until the age of 70. She was proud to be employed by the Department of National Defence at CFS St. John’s until she retired. She will be forever remembered by her co-workers as “Foggy”. As the sun sets on mom’s earthly journey, we celebrate a life well-lived. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew her—a legacy of love, faith, and storytelling. Cremation has taken place. The family will receive visitors at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Sunday, February 11th from 2 -4 PM and 7 -9PM. The funeral service will be held at St. David’s Presbyterian Church on Monday, February 12th at 11 AM. Donations in honour of Bouwina may be made to St. David’s Church or Bridges To Hope. Mom, we love you and will miss you. Voor altijd geliefd (forever loved). | Haan, Bouwina (I7073)

266 | It is with extreme sadness we announce the sudden passing of Frank Fogwill. Born on October 8, 1959, Frank departed from this earthly life on July 18, 2024. He was predeceased by his father, William (Bill) Fogwill in 2001 and most recently by his mother, Bouwina Haan Fogwill on February 5, 2024. Mourning his loss are his sister Margaret and brother-in-law Tim Heffernan (Ontario); his brother Bill and sister-in-law Sherry Fogwill (St. John’s); and his nephews Nicholas Fogwill, Kyle Heffernan and Shane (Godson) (Julie) Heffernan. He will also be fondly remembered by his many cousins and their extended families. When Frank was seven years old, he was afflicted with severe Osteomyelitis. While he spent two years in St. Clare’s on the children’s ward, he did not let that deter him. He never complained of fatigue or pain and thus was a great example of perseverance and determination. Frank grew up enjoying fishing, dirt bike riding, and raucous games of ball hockey with his neighbourhood friends. He loved music and he learned to play the bass guitar. Over time, he acquired a massive collection of albums and CDs and he was often on the lookout for the next album to enjoy. A Memorial University graduate, Frank was a voracious reader and listener of podcasts. Most recently he was a dedicated employee for St. David’s Presbyterian Church and St. Mark’s Anglican Church. Frank was a much loved and devoted son to his mother and he did his best to ensure her wish to live in her own home was supported. The family invites you to honour Frank’s memory by connecting with those who may be hiding their pain or by offering small acts of kindness to those in need of support. Donations to SPCA St. John’s https://spcastjohns.org/ and Lifewise NL https://lifewisenl.ca/ in his memory are also gratefully accepted. There will be a memorial reception at St. Mark’s Anglican Church at 203 Logy Bay Road on Monday, July 29 from 2-3:30pm. | Fogwill, William (I7076)

275 | It is with profound sadness that the family of our beautiful mother, Betty Murphy, announce her unexpected passing at the North Bay Regional Health Centre on Thursday, April 29, 2021. She was a loving and devoted wife of 59 years to our late father, Tom Murphy, who predeceased her in September, 2020. She was an amazing and much adored mother, Nan, Boopy and Great-nan to her children and their families. She was born and raised in St. John’s Newfoundland and went on to become a registered nurse. She married our father who had joined the Canadian Armed Forces (Airforce) and this meant raising a family of four children, working as a nurse, while crisscrossing Canada and the United States with the military while never once complaining. She made many life-long friends along the way. Our parents finally settled in North Bay where Mom continued to work as an RN at St. Joseph’s Hospital until her retirement. Being from Newfoundland, with her true East Coast hospitality, anyone dropping by meant endless (stealthily restocked!) snacks, always a great meal and delicious desserts. All the holiday meals were at Mom’s. Our parents loved travel adventures. They spent many winters in Florida with friends and also enjoyed cruising. Mom loved going for long walks, doing crossword puzzles, scratch bingo tickets, watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy and was always game for whatever her grandchildren threw at her, no matter how outlandish. Her last years were dedicated to caring for our father until his recent passing peacefully at home. We are able to take much comfort in knowing they are now together again where they will continue to grow in love, happiness and joy for all of eternity. Our mother also leaves behind her surviving siblings both in Newfoundland and Ontario and a large extended family. We will all miss her more that any words can convey. A very heartfelt thank you to Dr. Masri, nurses Jim and Lee Anne and all the staff of the emergency department at the NBRHC for the care and compassion they gave to our mother and family members. It is not enough to say they went above and beyond. Thank you to Beth from Pastoral Care for the blessings you gave our mother. A very special thank you to Dr. Cowan, Dr. Jinnah and all the staff at the Near North Medical Clinic for all the excellent care that you provided to our mother over the years. It will not be forgotten. Also, a very special thank you to our mother’s neighbours and friends who made a point of checking in with her even during these difficult COVID times. Siblings would also like to thank their sister, daughter Madonna, who cared for her so much and was always there to tend to her daily needs. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to McGuinty Funeral Home. In keeping with Mom’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at the Pro-Cathedral of the Assumption at a later date. Should you wish, memorial donations in our mother’s name to World Vision or Operation Smile are suggested. So small in stature; so huge of heart…our Mom, Betty. After he graduated from Hillcrest High School, Tom went to work at Abitibi Papers as an Instrument Mechanic, where he continued to work until he retired when the mill closed. He also was very active in his union, often taking on the leadership role to advocate for his colleagues. Tom was very social and did many things in the community. He was involved in various sports throughout the years including karate, baseball, curling, and five pin bowling. As a young man, Tom loved to travel the countryside on his motorcycle. He made many lifelong friendships which continue to this day. He was always willing to lend a hand and would go out of his way for anyone in need. Tom was a dedicated family man. After he met Fran and her daughter Jennifer, the couple went on to have 2 more children. Tom loved his 3 girls and was often found coaching their teams or cheering them on. He also loved to take them for coffee or on fishing trips and did his best to support all of their endeavours. As a retiree, Tom spent many hours out on Shebandowan Lake, fishing to his heart's content. He also gave of his time to the Humane Society, where he helped to train dogs to be ready for adoption. 277 | It was said that Jane was the daughter of "Old Man Matthews", however, research indicates that this was in fact John Matthews born about 1771, possibly brother or other relation of Jane's. It is unknown who Jane's parents are. Some researchers have suggested that William Matthews (1744-1823) and Elvir Langfer (1752-1821) were her parents, however, they were both British with no current known ties to Newfoundland and Jane was reportedly Mi'kmaq so this isn't possible. | Matthews, Jane (I2842)

286 | Johannesen, Jacqueline Dawn (Wareham), age 52, of St. Petersburg, Florida, passed away Sunday, May 22, 2016 after a courageous battle with cancer. Predeceased by her father David Wareham. She was the beloved wife of Michael Arthur Johannesen. She is survived by her three daughters: Lyndsey, 25, Melissa, 24, and Emily, 21. Jackie was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada on November 9th, 1963 and grew up there. She is survived by her mother Phyllis, and her five siblings: Joanne [Bob Kane], Terry Wareham, Jeanette [Bill Norris], Pamela [Don Forbes], Paula [Jeff Byron], plus a large circle of relatives and friends. After graduating High School, Jackie went on to attend Grace Hospital School of Nursing, subsequently she was recruited and moved to Florida in the United States. She fell in love with the Florida weather and after meeting her husband, decided to stay in the Tampa Bay Area. Jackie spent most of her career as a nurse at All Children's hospital in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit helping rehabilitate babies after open heart surgery. She studied to obtain her Master's in Healthcare Administration at St Francis University and moved into Quality Management at All Children's Hospital. She focused on making changes to create a better environment in the hospital for staff and patients. She was always an involved mother and spent many weekends at soccer tournaments, ballet recitals and school plays. She enjoyed making home cooked meals when her girls came back from college and liked to catch up on the latest news over a glass of wine. She was an incredible caregiver to her loving family. Jackie enjoyed sunsets and loved Pass-a-Grill beach. She loved spending time with her three daughters and husband. She was a warm and sweet soul, while being incredibly committed to a challenging career. Always finding ways to give back and help others, she was truly a principled person that lived a life of dignity and grace. She was without enemies yet spoke her mind. She enjoyed being in nature and looked forward to nights out in the lively downtown St. Pete area. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends, but the impact she made on those who loved her will not be forgotten. To know her was to love her. To honor Jackie’s wishes, her family has set up a trust fund for Canadian residents and a GoFundMe account for United States residents to raise funds for a memorial bench in Bowring Park located in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada. This would allow us to honor Jackie’s wishes of having a memorial bench for her friends and family to visit, located in a park she spent many of her days while growing up. Bowring Park was Jackie’s family’s backyard. In her youth, she and siblings would swim there during summer vacation and would get soft-serve ice cream. During her teenage years, Bowring Park became an essential hangout location for her group of friends. She occasionally would get in some trouble and always blamed it on the Park, never herself. During every trip home to Newfoundland, she made sure that there would be a visit to the park and held importance in instilling her memories and love for Bowring Park on her children and husband. The following link will bring you to the GoFundMe account: https://www.gofundme.com/262sznhw. Canadian residents can send a check or e-transfer to the CIBC in Mount Pearl, located at 164 Old Placentia Rd., Mount Pearl, NL Canada A1N 4Y9. The check can be payable to: Jackie Johannesen Memorial Trust Fund #3249212. | Wareham, Jacqueline Dawn (I4419)

288 | John married Amelia Amy (Emma) Decker of Rocky Harbour about 1840. John and Emma had thirteen children who then produced sixty-six grandchildren giving rise to the belief that the Roberts family populated Woody Point. In 1894 Bonne Bay only had a population of 336 and it is easy to imagine that at least a third were part of the extended Roberts family. Looking through the McAlpine Directories of the 1890s reveals that the men of the Robert’s family worked as fishermen, draper, lobster packers, general dealer and postmaster. Today the Historic Places website of Canada lists three properties which belonged to the Roberts family which survived the 1922 fire that destroyed much of Woody Point – John William Roberts house; Edward J Roberts house and Roberts store. | Roberts, John (I2735)

289 | John Paine, said to be an ex-Navy man. In fact, a relative described Paine as a deserter from a warship, who jumped ship near Quirpon and hid in the woods. He eventually walked to RockyHarbour, where he became known as "Man-o-war John Paine." 1838 Census of Bonne Bay: Name of Settlement Name of Residents Number in Family Years Here Native Place Occupation Bonne Bay John Paine 5 20 Jersey Salmon and herring fishery The above list was retrieved from a report to the British Colonial Office given by the captain of the Crocodile | Paine, John (I2696)

290 | John Rowland appears to have bought, in April 1871, from William Barnes of Bonne Bay a dwelling house, stage and ground attached for £12. This may be the house where in 1873, the Bonne Bay Post Office was established with John Rowland as postmaster. | Roberts, John Rowland (I4968)

292 | John was baptized at birth by the midwife. | Lovell, John (I2387)

293 | John's obituary indicates he had 3 brothers and that Montreal papers should copy. This leads me to think that Charles Wareham, who moved from Newfoundland to Montreal, was his brother and I have a DNA connection to Charles' descendants. On Charles' baptism record when he converted to Catholicism in 1879, his parents are listed Alexander Wareham and Mary Wheeler. Charles was also witness to John's marriage further indication that he was possibly a brother. | Wareham, John (I1230)

294 | John's parents could be John Flood and Catherine Welsh instead. Not sure at this point.... there are many conflicting trees on Ancestry and few to no records available online. | Flood *, Patrick * (I2880)

299 | Joseph is listed as a widower on his marriage to Mary Ann Nichols so Sarah must have died between 1833 and 1836. Possibly in childbirth of John in 1833 since there is no mother listed on John's baptism record? | Sarah (I373)
