201 | From conversation between Margie Sheridan, daughter of Will and Sarah, and Natalie Park on Feb 4, 2022: [paraphrased by Natalie] When Mom was 17 years old, she and her sister went to St. John's from Marystown and she went to work for a lawyer to take care of his children. She met Will and they were going out when she went to Boston with the family for 2-3 years. While she was gone, Will collected wood from the ships that came into the harbour and left wood on the wharf [from unloading cargo] and built their house on Pearce Avenue. Will, being a cooper and very handy, he removed the back of his car and turned it into a truck so he could collect the wood. Sarah returned to St John's around the time of the tsunami. They married when she returned and took a horse and buggy to Holyrood for their honeymoon. | Coady, Sarah Patricia (I1089)

202 | From Grandson in 2021: Henry Spencer Purchase (b: Twillingate @ 1880) left Twillingate at age of about 17 to become a miner. He mined in PIlleys Island then went to the copper mines in Tilt Cove. It is here I believe he met Louisa Wareham of Shoe Cove. In about 1903/4 they migrated to the coal mines in Sydney, NS. On December 20, 1905 they were married, there's a marriage registry doc signed by each. Louisa, age 21, lists place of birth as Shoe Cove, father and mother as James and Ellen Wareham. Father was a fisherman. Henry and Louisa had 4 boys between 1905 and 1910, James, John, William Gordon, my dad, and Henry Augustus. John died as child. On Jan 3, 1911, Henry Spencer Purchase was killed in a mine explosion and Louisa had to carry on with no job or money and 3 boys under the age 7. She took in laundry, boarders, what ever it took. James went to the mines at age of 8 to help out. In 1915 Louisa had a child out of wedlock, Charles. Rumor was that he was the product of a boarder, a Baptist minister. No one really knows for sure. In any event she was able to raise all four boys in the turbulent teens and 20's in Cape Breton mining town of Florence. Sons William and Henry migrated to Toronto in about 1936 and Charles and Louisa followed in 1938. Charles never left her side until she died in 1967 in Brantford Ontario. He was found dead 12 days later. Louisa was the most enigmatic person I ever came across. She basically never spoke of anything substantial. Charles was in fact her spokesperson. | Wareham, Louisa (I1297)

Passed in: SYDNEY, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed on: February 8th, 2012 Howard Wolfe Libbey, 94, “crossed the bar” on Wednesday, February 8, 2012 in Cape Breton Regional Hospital, a resolute navy man to the end. After high school, Howard began work as a machinist at Sydney Steel. Owing to his love of the sea, Howard then went to Halifax and enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1941. Over the next 24 years, he served on 16 ships in war and peace, retiring as Chief Engineer First Class, the White Chief of the East Coast. Howard and Jenny shared a full and active life for 60 years, making their home in Dartmouth, Mount Uniacke, and finally in Sydney. After a brief first retirement from the navy, Howard joined the NSEIT, which later became CBU, as chief stationary engineer, retiring again in 1978. Retirement? Not really a word used when speaking about Howard. Howard was a man of self-discipline and routine, and a figure of mechanical ingenuity for many. Together with his wife Jenny, they did extensive travels throughout Atlantic Canada and the New England States. Howard and Jenny also traveled to many parts of the world that he had visited while in the RCN – Londonderry, Venice, Cuba … Howard’s service with the Royal Canadian Legion was recognized with their highest award, the Palm Leaf. Additionally, he was proud to be declared “a letter-man” by CBU. In 2006, he established the Howard and Mary Genevieve Libbey bursary at CBU, awarded annually to aid an engineering student. Music also played an important part of Howard’s life. Eldest son of Oscar Elmore Libbey Sr. and Bridget Marie (Wolfe) Libbey.
