155 | Doug used the name Ballard when performing as a duet with his wife Pat so they wouldn't be confused with another duet also called The Billards. Obituary: Mr Douglas Harold Ballard (Billard), aged 62 years, passed away peacefully with his family by his side at his residence on June 24th, 2001. Born March 10, 1939 in St. John's Newfoundland, Doug entered the armed services at the early age of sixteen. From here he worked on the lake boats and then for Dupont Canada in Kingston, Ontario. Doug came home to Thunder Bay and was employed by Powell Equipment in the parts department. While here, he and his wife, Pat, gave birth to their son, Michael. Doug and his family moved to Oshawa in southern Ontario and on to Whitby where he spent most of his life working as the parts department manager at the Dominion Auto Plant. Doug's life was consumed by his love and passion for music. He managed entertainment businesses in southern Ontario and wrote several songs, of which "Uncle Tom" and "Whistle on the River" were the most successful, being recorded and published by the Mercy Brothers. He also spent six months during the Vietnam War entertaining troops in Asia. Doug carried on his pursuit of music in Thunder Bay, pickin' and grinnin' with the gang at the hall. Special friends Ian Stewart, Al Grey, Jim Parres and Bill Peterson wrote, played and ocmposed songs together. The music lives on. Doug was predeceased by his father, Thomas Gordon Parker in 1969 and his brother, Thomas Billard in 1978. He is survived by his daughter Kathy Curran (Tom) Oshawa, son Michael (Toronto), mother Dorothy Parker (Thunder Bay), sister Linda Gifford (Don) Selkirk, Manitoba, brothers Tom (Fran), Joseph (Janet) and Ken Parker and a sister Sharon Ulvang (Paul), all of Thunder Bay. Doug will be missed by his many neices, nephews and grandchildren whom he loved dearly. Doug's happiest time in life was bringing his daughter Kathy home to Whitby and a new beginning. He cherished his grandchildren Charity, David and Kadessa. Doug says "see ya later" to the ball team and especially the gang at Classy Q's (Dean, George and Judy, Pat and Heather) and the Circle Taxi in Whitby, and Danny Boy (dog) in Thunder Bay. A Special thank you goes to the loving and caring people of the Palliative care group in Thunder Bay who made Doug's final journey so comfortable. They are Dr. Davis (Spence Clinic), Ann McGoey, Judy Wright and Joanna (VON), Jackie McDonald (Homecare) and Janet Haycock (Social Services). As per Doug's wishes, cremation has taken place and the will not be a service. Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, VON or the Palliative Care Group in Thunder Bay would be appreciated. "There's a whistle on the river/And it's calling with a tune/That's very deep inside of me/And I'll be coming soon" | Billard, Douglas Harold (I1247)

156 | DR. MICHAEL 'MICKEY' BRENNAN MD, CCFP, FCFP, Died November 25, 2017 in London Ontario. Born July 1, 1930 he was the last living of eleven children born to Louis and Miriam (Minta) Brennan (née Zotnick), in Dublin, Ireland. Mickey led a generous, courageous, and unapologetic life. He fought poverty, homelessness, anti- semitism, decades of heart disease and four bouts of cancer. An elementary school drop-out he literally fought for an education - a championship boxer, he put himself through medical school on boxing purses, tiny loans from whomever had money, and many and varied sofas. At the forefront of contemporary family medicine, he became Professor Emeritus of Family Medicine at Western University, and a recipient of Iceland's Order of the Falcon. Mickey is predeceased by his parents, Louis and Minta, his Auntie Gertie, his second wife, Linda Spano, his adopted granddaughter, Mary Bee, and all ten of his siblings: Esther, Bea, Rose, Hilda, Joe, Mattie, David, Aubrey, Stanley, and Annella. He is survived by his children, Dawn, Nonie, and Keith, their mother, Teresa Brennan, his son-in-law, Michael Peirce, his granddaughters, Jocelyn and Andie Peirce and Sasha-Lee Prince, and his devoted caregiver, Monette Lopez. And dozens of nieces and nephews, scattered across the globe. In the end he lost the fight against dementia, but not his love of life, a good laugh, a great meal, shopping, singing, and the companionship of friends and family. He has embarked on one last trip home to Dublin, where his nephew, Rabbi Lipa Brennan, will return him to the earth. The family will hold an Open House to celebrate Mickey's life, Sunday December 10th from 2pm to 4pm in the Parlour and Drawing Room of Idelwyld Inn, 36 Grand Avenue, London Ontario. Please drop by and visit. Memorial donations are welcome to the Brennan Spano Family Foundation; please contact the Victoria Foundation, victoriafoundation.bc.ca | Brennan, Dr. Michael MICKEY (I1296)

176 | Excerpt from "Descendants of Joseph West" compiled by Rex Gibbons, 2010 "At the age of 17, Ronald lied about his age and signed up for military service in Grand Falls, Newfoundland. He became a member of the 59th Regiment of the Royal Newfoundland Heavy Artillery. After some training and a brief stop in Halifax, along with many other Newfoundlanders, he headed overseas (a 28-day voyage). For the next six years, his travels in the military took him to England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany, and other parts of Europe. After returning home after the war, as a Lance Corporal, he settled in Ladle Cove, the home of his wife, Doris. Before he died, he gave his grandson, John-Charles Tulk, the old uniform that he was wearing when he came home from the war in 1945. Young John-Charles and his sister, Jacinta, became members of Air Cadets 537 Squadron of Gander, and John-Charles wore his grandfather's uniform at the 2005 annual review where his sister, Jacinta, gave a speech about her grandfather, appropriately called "My Hero". Mr. West, by then very feeble, was also proudly escorted to the podium after the speech." | West, Ronald Percy (I745)

184 | Fatal Norris Arm North blaze 'just a bed of flames,' firefighter says Pot of oil on stove led to fire, investigation finds CBC News · Posted: Apr 10, 2008 5:20 AM EDT A pot of overheated oil sparked a fire that killed a man in central Newfoundland and gutted his home, police said Thursday. The RCMP identified Norman Kean, 50, as the man killed early Wednesday in a house fire in Norris Arm North that was so intense it woke up neighbours several doors away. The RCMP have ruled the fire as accidental, Sgt. Bruce Drover said. Kean was the only person in the house at the time of the fire. Volunteer firefighter Debbie Menchenton said the Norris Arm North blaze melted the siding on a next-door house and snapped power lines. "The house was completely gutted," Menchenton said. "The walls, the roof — it was just a bed of flames down on the floor. That's all we could see." Menchenton, who received the call at 3 a.m. Wednesday, lives only a few doors away from the destroyed house. "I think everybody's in shock," she said. "A lot of people weren't even aware that there was somebody in the house right now, because he had been visiting relatives, I think." Neighbour Marge Gaulton brushed away tears as she remembered Kean, whom she met through his daughter. She described Kean — who she said had moved from New-Wes-Valley to be with his former girlfriend and his child — as a true gentleman. "He was a very quiet man, kept to himself a fair bit, kept to his close friends," she said. "I'll just probably miss seeing him." | Kean, Norman (I323)

200 | From conversation between Margie Sheridan, daughter of Will and Sarah, and Natalie Park on Feb 4, 2022: [paraphrased by Natalie] When Mom was 17 years old, she and her sister went to St. John's from Marystown and she went to work for a lawyer to take care of his children. She met Will and they were going out when she went to Boston with the family for 2-3 years. While she was gone, Will collected wood from the ships that came into the harbour and left wood on the wharf [from unloading cargo] and built their house on Pearce Avenue. Will, being a cooper and very handy, he removed the back of his car and turned it into a truck so he could collect the wood. Sarah returned to St John's around the time of the tsunami. They married when she returned and took a horse and buggy to Holyrood for their honeymoon. | Kirby, William WILL (I1063)
