    Wilson celebrated his 95th birthday in Lumsden at the home of his son, Lawrence, just a few days before Larry's tragic death by drowning when the 15-metre steel tugboat, Checkmate III, sank about 12 kilometres north of Baccalieu Island while in transit from Wesleyville to St. John's.

    Martin married Olive Louise West on 11 Nov 1937 in Lumsden North, Newfoundland. Olive (daughter of Alphaeus Barbour West and Beatrice Ellsworth) was born on 15 Feb 1919 in Carmanville, Newfoundland; died on 6 Jun 2003; was buried on 9 Jun 2003 in Lumsden, Newfoundland.     PARSONS, Lawrence –
    69 of Lumsden passed away tragically at sea on Thursday, January 31, 2008. Predeceased by mother; Olive Parsons and father-in-law; Charles White. Left to mourn with fond and loving memories are his wife, Elizabeth, sons, Glenn (Cyndy-Ann) of Mount Pearl, Merlin of Grande Prairie, AB., Adrian (Amanda) of Toronto, Ont., Wade (Carol Ann ) of Goose Bay, and Scott (Melanie) of Edmonton, AB; daughters, Laurie (Ed White) of San Diego, CA, USA, Ardella ( Dean Fowler) of Nanaimo, B.C., and Marquita (Dale Taylor) of Fort McMurray, AB; father, Wilson Parsons of Lumsden, mother- in-law; Myrtle White of Goose Bay, 12 grandchildren and a very large circle of family and friends. Funeral service took place from the United Church, Lumsden on February 4th with Rev. T. Bowman officiating. Interment followed from the United Church cemetery, Lumsden.     On the night of Thursday, January 31, 2008, the 15-metre steel tugboat, Checkmate III, sank about 12 kilometres north of Baccalieu Island, Newfoundland. Coast Guard search and rescue responded after receiving a garbled mayday call (probably from a cell phone). A Cormorant helicopter, a Hercules aircraft, and two vessels were dispatched immediately to the scene.

    When they arrived, they found the two men (Lawrence Parsons and his colleague, Christopher Wade Oram), in the water wearing survival suits, and a liferaft was floating nearby, but there was no sign of the boat (it had sunk). Efforts to revive the men were unsuccessful, though there was some indication that they had been seen to wave their hands before being rescued. A spokesman for the Coast Guard, Kevin Barnes, is quoted in the St. John's Telegram as saying that "Both survival suits had considerable water inside, ... somehow water got in, which reduces the thermal ability of the suits to keep you alive". Autopsies conducted late Friday, February 1, in St. John's concluded that Parsons and Oram died from a combination of drowning and hypothermia.
