    Garland enlisted on June 18, 1915, along with his brother Stanley, in the 2nd contingent. They fought in the Gallipoli campaign in Turkey, at the Dardanelles, then moved to Egypt, then on to France to the Western Front.
    Garland was wounded, shot in the leg in France and was shipped to Scotland to recover. It is believed he returned to active duty and joined the CEF forces until 1917. He returned to St. John's after this point, met and married Amelia Woodland.

    It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our loved one on Wednesday, July 6, 2016 at Lakeside Homes, Gander, Joseph Clarence Spencer age 92 years of Carmanville. Resting at The Salvation Army Citadel, Carmanville from where his funeral service will take place on Saturday, July 9, 2016 at 2 P.M. Interment will follow at The Salvation Army Cemetery, Carmanville South. In lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be made to The Spencer Family.

Sadly missed by his sister Mary Kemp of Kentville, N.S. and stepson Graham McKay and spouse Barbara Raitz. To his numerous nieces, nephews, other family and friends, you may visit at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME - A.W. MILES CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Eglinton Avenue East), from 6-9 p.m. on Wednesday June 7th and from 2-5 p.m. on Thursday June 8th. The funeral will take place on Friday June 9th at 1 o'clock in the funeral home chapel. Joe is survived by his sons Mark (Nicole) of Timmins, Ontario and Richard (Julie) of Australia; daughters Karen (Gordon) of Abbotsford and Shelley of Vancouver; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his brother Stan of Toronto and sister Mary of Kentville, Nova Scotia, as well as many nieces and nephews. Joe served proudly with the Canadian Army in Europe from 1939 to 1946. He was a long-time member of the Royal Canadian Legion. A Service of Remembrance will take place from Branch 17, RCL, Courtenay at a future date. A notice will be placed prior. Pre-deceased by her parents John and Annie Pennell, cherished grandson Sterling Abbott, great-grandson Pacy Pinsent, great-grandson Lucas Winsor and nephew Bruce King.

    Left to mourn with a lifetime of loving memories are her devoted husband of 71 years, Joseph(Ned) Abbott, her children Lawrence(Joyce), Naboth(Brenda), Verna Dampier(William), Leslie(Dale), Pearce(Wendy), Homer(Linda), Ula Tulk(Roy), 20 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild, sister Eva Kudelka, nieces Bonnie Brostowitz(Dave), Tammy McKnight, Tina House, nephew Craig McKnight, and a large circle of extended relatives and friends.
