    Anne Green of Trinity married John Ki(e)rby from Ireland and had a number of children. Current theory is that one of their sons is the father of John Thomas Kirby who was born abt 1842 in Small Point, Newfoundland.

    I have DNA matches to descendants of Patrick and Evangeline but I'm not 100% sure of the relationship. Since Patrick named his first daughter Julia, this could mean his mother was Julia King. John Thomas also named his first daughter Julia so I suspect John Thomas and Patrick were brothers.

    On the Attestation papers, William's mother is listed as living on Braddel Sq. This makes me wonder if he had a lisp or speech impediment as he couldn't say Brazil's correctly?

    William Patrick's date of birth on his attestation papers is April 22, 1877, however, we have vital statistics records of James being baptized June 16, 1877, only 2 months later! Why wasn't William Patrick also baptized at that time if he was just born? What dates are incorrect?

    Age at death was reported as 48. This would put his birth around 1872. Was he the oldest of the Kirby children and 1877 was incorrect on attestation papers? Also, William's brother Philip born approx 1873 is listed as the second oldest on their father's probate records.

    Natalie's Memories of Nanny:
    I used to drink tea with her, I remember sitting at the coffee table in the living room while she rocked in her rocking chair. She would have black tea in a china cup and saucer and she would pour a little bit of tea in the saucer to cool to let me drink from it.

    I shared a room with her for a while when I was a child. I slept in her double bed with her. I remember almost falling out of bed one night while sleeping and she caught me by my pajamas and hauled me back up on the bed.

    She loved Bingo and would go often. I remember she would wear her fur coat to the Star Hall for Bingo. Sometimes we would go pick her up after and sometimes I would be in bed when she got home. I always knew she was home because I could smell the cigarette smoke from her coat. She didn't smoke, but the other Bingo players did.

    KIRBY - Died suddenly July 18, 1979, William Kirby, retired Cooper, age 76 years. Leaving to mourn his loving wife Sarah; two sons, Francis and William of St. John's; five daughters, Teresa (Mrs. Michael Brennan) London, Ont., Regina (Mrs Walter Andrews), St. John's, Lucy (Mrs Donald McKinley) Moncton, NB, Carol (Mrs John Burke) Petrolia, Ont., and Margeurite (Mrs, James Sheridan) Montreal, Que.; 16 grandchildren; three brothers: John and Philip at St. John's, Patrick at Sydney, Nova Scotia; five sisters: Elizabeth and Florence at St. John's; Margaret, Bride and Marie in Ontario and also a large circle of other relatives and friends. Remains resting at Caul's Funeral Home.

    William was a cooper, the occupation being learned from his father, and he operated a cooperage out of his backyard on Pearce Avenue.

    When Mom was 17 years old, she and her sister went to St. John's from Marystown and she went to work for a lawyer to take care of his children. She met Will and they were going out when she went to Boston with the family for 2-3 years. While she was gone, Will collected wood from the ships that came into the harbour and left wood on the wharf [from unloading cargo] and built their house on Pearce Avenue. Will, being a cooper and very handy, he removed the back of his car and turned it into a truck so he could collect the wood. Sarah returned to St John's around the time of the tsunami. They married when she returned and took a horse and buggy to Holyrood for their honeymoon.
