    In the name of God Amen. The twelfth day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventy-nine I John Sparks of Harbour Grace in the Island of Newfoundland planter and carpenter being sound and perfect both of body and mind and of perfect memory thanks be given to Allmighty God knowing that it is appointed unto all men once to die do make and order this my last will and testament that is to say principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul into the hands of Allmighty God that gave it and my body recommend to the earth to be buried in decent Christian burial of my two sons Ruben and Thomas nothing doubting but at the general resurrection I shall receive the same again by the Allmighty power of God and as touching such worldly estate wherewith it has pleased God to bless me in this life I give demise and dispose of the same in the following manner

    first i give to my son William the house he now occupies and back yard and walk from the front door to the road

    Second I give to my son Ruben the cabbage garden he occupied now joining the land his house stands on adding ten feet more to the westward with it allso that piece of that land the north side of the road bond by Sheppards fence eastward Northward by Snow and Ash

    Third I give to my son Thomas the house i now possesses the back yard and garden south of the house the west part the garden bound by the road North and my son Ruben east allso that piece of land the north side of the road bound to the east by my son Ruben North by Ash west by the road leading to Salavins Hill this is my last will and testament whereas i set my hand and seal pronounced and declared by the said John X Sparks.     First I give and bequest to my son Solomon Sparks the western part of my Fishing room Bound on the West by Moses Sparks on the east by James Sparks and Stephen Sparks Bound on the North by a point all the land on the north side of the Brook I also give to my son Solomon the piece of land bound by the road and by John Youden also one third part of a piece of land back of the hill also a portion of the west land on the west Side also one sheep
    Second I give and bequest to my son Robert Sparks the west part of the fruit garden leading up from the stage I also give and bequest to my son Robert all the remaining part of my land with the exception of forty feet which i give to my grand child Emma Sparks south west east of the house I all so give to my son Robert the dwelling house I now live in also all out houses also three Sheep also my bed and bedding
    Third I give and bequest to my grand child Stephen Sparks one Bed and pillow Forth I give and bequest to my grand daughter Emma Sparks forty feet of land south West of her Mothers Dwelling house and one hundred feet to the eastward.

    Notes:

    Maud's biological father is officially unknown as there is no birth record for her. However DNA testing has shown that it could possibly be Henry Harry Simms (1872-1955). Some of his great great grandchildren have tested and are third cousins to me. This is the correct relationship for us to share him as an ancestor of great great grandparent.

    There is a photo of Henry Harry Simms that was found on Ancestry.ca, user Cora Simms. He has the same nose as Maud so this is further evidence that there could be a relationship.

    More research into DNA relations is required to confirm.

    Thomas Gordon (Lush) West's baptism registry implies Maud was married to John Lush when Thomas was born in 1908 and her name was previously Sparkes. I had previously assumed/believed she was using the name Lush after her mother married William Lush in 1897; no marriage records have been found for John Lush and Maud or death record for John. POSSIBLE theory: her step brother John Lush stood in as Thomas' father so he wouldn't be seen as illegitimate.

    Obituary:
    Mr Douglas Harold Ballard (Billard), aged 62 years, passed away peacefully with his family by his side at his residence on June 24th, 2001.
    Born March 10, 1939 in St. John's Newfoundland, Doug entered the armed services at the early age of sixteen. From here he worked on the lake boats and then for Dupont Canada in Kingston, Ontario. Doug came home to Thunder Bay and was employed by Powell Equipment in the parts department. While here, he and his wife, Pat, gave birth to their son, Michael. Doug and his family moved to Oshawa in southern Ontario and on to Whitby where he spent most of his life working as the parts department manager at the Dominion Auto Plant.
    Doug's life was consumed by his love and passion for music. He managed entertainment businesses in southern Ontario and wrote several songs, of which "Uncle Tom" and "Whistle on the River" were the most successful, being recorded and published by the Mercy Brothers. He also spent six months during the Vietnam War entertaining troops in Asia.
    Doug carried on his pursuit of music in Thunder Bay, pickin' and grinnin' with the gang at the hall. Special friends Ian Stewart, Al Grey, Jim Parres and Bill Peterson wrote, played and ocmposed songs together. The music lives on.
    Doug was predeceased by his father, Thomas Gordon Parker in 1969 and his brother, Thomas Billard in 1978. He is survived by his daughter Kathy Curran (Tom) Oshawa, son Michael (Toronto), mother Dorothy Parker (Thunder Bay), sister Linda Gifford (Don) Selkirk, Manitoba, brothers Tom (Fran), Joseph (Janet) and Ken Parker and a sister Sharon Ulvang (Paul), all of Thunder Bay.
    Doug will be missed by his many neices, nephews and grandchildren whom he loved dearly. Doug's happiest time in life was bringing his daughter Kathy home to Whitby and a new beginning. He cherished his grandchildren Charity, David and Kadessa.
    Doug says "see ya later" to the ball team and especially the gang at Classy Q's (Dean, George and Judy, Pat and Heather) and the Circle Taxi in Whitby, and Danny Boy (dog) in Thunder Bay.
    A Special thank you goes to the loving and caring people of the Palliative care group in Thunder Bay who made Doug's final journey so comfortable. They are Dr. Davis (Spence Clinic), Ann McGoey, Judy Wright and Joanna (VON), Jackie McDonald (Homecare) and Janet Haycock (Social Services).
    As per Doug's wishes, cremation has taken place and the will not be a service. Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, VON or the Palliative Care Group in Thunder Bay would be appreciated.

    It is with tremendous grief and sadness that we announce the passing of Tom Parker after a lengthy illness.

    He was born and raised in Port Arthur. After he graduated from Hillcrest High School, Tom went to work at Abitibi Papers as an Instrument Mechanic, where he continued to work until he retired when the mill closed. He also was very active in his union, often taking on the leadership role to advocate for his colleagues.

    Tom was very social and did many things in the community. He was involved in various sports throughout the years including karate, baseball, curling, and five pin bowling. As a young man, Tom loved to travel the countryside on his motorcycle. He made many lifelong friendships which continue to this day. He was always willing to lend a hand and would go out of his way for anyone in need.

    Tom was a dedicated family man. After he met Fran and her daughter Jennifer, the couple went on to have 2 more children.

    Tom loved his 3 girls and was often found coaching their teams or cheering them on. He also loved to take them for coffee or on fishing trips and did his best to support all of their endeavours.

    As a retiree, Tom spent many hours out on Shebandowan Lake, fishing to his heart's content. He also gave of his time to the Humane Society, where he helped to train dogs to be ready for adoption.

    Late in his life, Tom became a grandfather and could not have been more delighted with his 3 grandchildren whom he loved to visit. Tom is lovingly remembered by his wife Fran, daughters Jennifer (Gerry), Stephanie, Brittany (John) and grandchildren Edward, Alexandria and Heidi. He is also remembered by his sisters Linda (Don) and Sharon (Paul), and brothers Joseph (Janet), and Kenneth, and many nieces, nephews and other relatives. Tom was predeceased by his parents and his two older brothers.

    A service to celebrate the life of Tom Parker will be held on Friday, August 5, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. in the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 N. Court Street, with Rev. Harold Hunt presiding.

    In lieu of flowers, donations to Parkinson Foundation of Canada, The Canadian Cancer Society or the Thunder Bay & District Humane Society would be appreciated.

    JANES, Beverly Ruth (August 21, 1955 – November 2, 2017) – It is with great sadness that I announce the peacefully passing of my beloved sister Beverly at the Health Sciences Centre in her 63rd year.
