    Joseph was a member of the Salvation Army and was their Flag Sergeant and would sit on a stool at the corner of Gottingen and Carad St. whole the band played each week. He was always regarded as a snappy dresser, which is reflected in the photo above[profile photo]. He would on Saturday mornings walk up to O'Malleys Bakery and wait for the warm fresh bread to be taken out of the oven to get the first loaves. He used a cane and always packed his groceries in a double handed, black leather shopping bag.

    Joseph would sometimes slip a penny to granddaughter Mary West when she would visit.



    Joseph was a talented carpenter. However, he used a lot of nails and it was said anything be built would have to be burned down because it would never come apart.

    Garland enlisted on June 18, 1915, along with his brother Stanley, in the 2nd contingent. They fought in the Gallipoli campaign in Turkey, at the Dardanelles, then moved to Egypt, then on to France to the Western Front.
    Garland was wounded, shot in the leg in France and was shipped to Scotland to recover. It is believed he returned to active duty and joined the CEF forces until 1917. He returned to St. John's after this point, met and married Amelia Woodland.

    Name:
    Walter worked with his father and brothers in the cod and lobster fisheries. He also worked at other jobs, including the lumberwoods, until he became lightkeeper on the Offer Wadham Island.

    Walter was appointed lightkeeper on Offer Wadham Island in September 1938 and stayed for 22 years. A new Swedish Daylen battery light went into operation on November 8, 1960, and Walter came off the island on November 28, 1960. However, he continued to look after the light for another few years, going in and out from time to time whenever the light needed attention; he officially retired in November, 1967. His assistant for many years was his brother-in-law, Herbert Abbott. Walter was awarded the C.S.F. for services rendered during the 2nd World War.

    Name:
    Charlie was still living at Lumsden North in 1946. The Wests lived well out towards the Queen's Head, and on the morning of Friday, December 17, 1946, Charlie was up long before daylight to see if it was a good morning for a bird. Charlie was known as a "great hand fer the gun" (Raymond W. Guy's book "From the Straight Shore".) It was a real winter's morning, the wind on the land with snow and blowing snow. The snow eased up a bit and Charlie saw what he thought was the morning star. But the star seemed to be swaying and, as the snow lightened a bit more, he saw other lights below the star and realized they were the lights on a ship.

    The SS Thackery was bound for Botwood for a load of newsprint from the paper mill at Grand Falls. After she passed Cat Harbour Island (Norther Island), she was caught in a gale on the land and slowly drifted ashore on Queen's Head. Efforts to take the crew off by boats failed, but a line was gotten ashore, a bosun's chair was rigged, and after four hours, all were safely landed. The ship spent the winter grounded on Queen's Head but did not suffer much damage. On the first high tide of the Spring, she was refloated and went to St. John's for repairs.     Passed peacefully away on Sunday, February 18, 2018 at Lakeside Nursing Home in Gander surrounded by her loving family, Alva Loretta Abbott in her 88th year. Pre-deceased by her parents John and Annie Pennell, cherished grandson Sterling Abbott, great-grandson Pacy Pinsent, great-grandson Lucas Winsor and nephew Bruce King.

    Left to mourn with a lifetime of loving memories are her devoted husband of 71 years, Joseph(Ned) Abbott, her children Lawrence(Joyce), Naboth(Brenda), Verna Dampier(William), Leslie(Dale), Pearce(Wendy), Homer(Linda), Ula Tulk(Roy), 20 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild, sister Eva Kudelka, nieces Bonnie Brostowitz(Dave), Tammy McKnight, Tina House, nephew Craig McKnight, and a large circle of extended relatives and friends.

    Our deepest gratitude to the nurses and staff of Lakeside Nursing Home for their compassionate care.

    69 of Lumsden passed away tragically at sea on Thursday, January 31, 2008. Predeceased by mother; Olive Parsons and father-in-law; Charles White. Left to mourn with fond and loving memories are his wife, Elizabeth, sons, Glenn (Cyndy-Ann) of Mount Pearl, Merlin of Grande Prairie, AB., Adrian (Amanda) of Toronto, Ont., Wade (Carol Ann ) of Goose Bay, and Scott (Melanie) of Edmonton, AB; daughters, Laurie (Ed White) of San Diego, CA, USA, Ardella ( Dean Fowler) of Nanaimo, B.C., and Marquita (Dale Taylor) of Fort McMurray, AB; father, Wilson Parsons of Lumsden, mother- in-law; Myrtle White of Goose Bay, 12 grandchildren and a very large circle of family and friends.     On the night of Thursday, January 31, 2008, the 15-metre steel tugboat, Checkmate III, sank about 12 kilometres north of Baccalieu Island, Newfoundland. Coast Guard search and rescue responded after receiving a garbled mayday call (probably from a cell phone). A Cormorant helicopter, a Hercules aircraft, and two vessels were dispatched immediately to the scene.

    When they arrived, they found the two men (Lawrence Parsons and his colleague, Christopher Wade Oram), in the water wearing survival suits, and a liferaft was floating nearby, but there was no sign of the boat (it had sunk). Efforts to revive the men were unsuccessful, though there was some indication that they had been seen to wave their hands before being rescued. A spokesman for the Coast Guard, Kevin Barnes, is quoted in the St. John's Telegram as saying that "Both survival suits had considerable water inside, ... somehow water got in, which reduces the thermal ability of the suits to keep you alive". Autopsies conducted late Friday, February 1, in St. John's concluded that Parsons and Oram died from a combination of drowning and hypothermia.
